The Julie Shinton Fried Sustainable Schools Award

This premier sustainability award was created in 2020 to honor Julie Shinton Fried and her exceptional work with Sustainable Schools as Brightside's Community Education Manager. The annual award is given to a school that demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and educating students with a concern for the future, just as Julie has done for over 21 years. Recipient schools receive a sustainable bamboo plaque with an iron stand along with a $500 award to purchase sustainable items for the school.

The Partnership for a Green City and Brightside work with public, parochial, and private schools on Youth Summits on the Urban Heat Island Effect and other sustainability topics and we see the passionate teachers and students.  We want to recognize local schools that make sustainability a priority educating, leaders of the future.

Darleen Horton described Julie as "a builder of bridges.  She connects people of all ages to environmental awareness, responsibility and community. Her super power is her ability to engage and empower students and teachers to become stewards of the environment and to make their own school, neighborhood, and community a better place to live. She leads by example, going the extra mile for others and is loved for the person she is.  Julie brings about positive change by being a champion for the environment, for young people, and for the city of Louisville. She is a quietly tenacious warrior working to make a sustainable environment for us all".
